Week 1: Long Days Journey Into Night

Sometimes I wonder what I'm gonna go
Cause there ain't no cure for the summertime blues...

So Labor Day has come and passed.  And with it, symbolically if not meteorologically, Summer.  By now, Messrs. Cincotta & McGuire will have put away their party white's - though one suspects you'd have to pry their Nantucket Red-wear out of their cold, inebriated hands regardless of the season.

No matter.  It's football season!  So let's talk about golf.  Or more specifically, my relationship with golf - an avocation, over the past few years, with which I've gotten increasing engaged.

The irony of this step change in passion... occurring during one's AARP-eligible years... is not lost on me.

One could liken it to someone late in life, seeing an awesome Keanu Reeves movie about a guy who fights demonic forces in order to stop the unlocking of The Seven Seals and triggering The End of Days-- an outcome, if the religious texts are to be taken literally, will be delivered by A Pale Rider.

Probably not of the Clint Eastwood ilk.  Although it could be - my daughter tells me he holds considerable sway in Monterey which looks a lot like Heaven on Earth.

So it wouldn't be that big of a stretch to think they'd put him in charge of Apocalyptic Enforcement...

But I digress.

In this particular metaphor, I'm the wannabe bible studies novice who tells his world class biblical scholar pals, "hey, I think I'm gonna take a shot at unlocking that seven seals thing..."   And they acknowledge, politely, while in turn heading back to their favorite scholar pub, to laugh their asses off.

Can he actually get good at golf?  It'll take a miracle...
"Have fun unlocking the secrets of a millennium!"

At any rate, as I work through golf's 1st Seal, I'm reading watching and reading a lot about the game, including a recent article on Francesco Molinari and his British Open win.

There are many interesting Notre Dame football parallels involving overcoming the weight of history while competing head-to-head against several other prominent, if somewhat diminished, other programs (e.g., McIlroy and his poor recent history in majors, Spieth experiencing the worst year of his professional life and Woods experiencing the worst decade of his professional life).

Thus ND found itself Saturday night in more of a must win situation than maybe anyone cared to admit.

Word of the Week

Used in a sentence:  As young Jerrence watched the latter stages of the 2nd half unfold, he couldn't help but be affected by how quotidian the football game had become.

What promised to be an epic grudge match between two rivals, the contest had devolved into a prime time showcase of two pedestrian coaching strategies - one intent on playing not to lose*, the other playing not to win.

*One understands why Kelly played it like he did.  UM showed no evidence of forcing him into having to take any risks to score.

Quote of The Week

"An expert is somebody who is more than 50 miles from home, has no responsibility for implementing the advice he gives, and shows slides."

Ed Meese

Well, maybe one savant...

UM is gonna win easily, eh?  So much for anyone listening to the ESPN Game Day savants.

And I use that latter term very loosely, Desmond.

Game Day Observations

I say when it drops you're gonna feel it...

It's fair to say both coaches came into this game with a substantial amount of public (and partisan) pressure to win a big game.  One came out with a reprieve (I wouldn't exactly overstate the longterm benefits for Kelly just yet) while the other still has got the lunatics at the gate.

All in all an awesome weekend - in pictures...

We're missing a Jerome...

Jerome, the J-Club may have an opening..

A House Divided - at least for three hours...

The Brothers Rasmus (Garrett, Jerome, Blair) and friend

Yeah, baby!

1.  Let's get the only insight that matters out of the way quickly:  ND doesn't win without Wimbush.

I told you I don't like chicken.
2.  Has Harbaugh ever considered contact lenses?

Merely as a public service / friendly advice, coach: consider it.

It just might help minimize your otherwise completely unnerving similarity to Michael Douglas's "Falling Down" character.

3.  I gotta give Jonathan Doerer credit - it's not easy for a kicker to get the trifecta:

 *  1st kickoff OB penalty
 *  Unnecessary roughness penalty
 *  Short kickoff returned for a TD
4.  Back to Wimbush and, maybe, Chip Long:   I don't believe throwing 50-50 'jump balls' is a sustainable passing strategy

5.  That said, if Alize Mack doesn't catch another ball all season...

...and that could be closer to reality than one would like to believe...

He made it count.

6.  Let's give it up for Chris Finke and his 'nervous bird' TD celebration.   Putting that ND education to good use!

7.  Try Jah-far (Armstrong) love.  I think we're gonna be okay at RB.

Hey!  Get your hand off my...
8.  They say strength up the middle is key.  If so,  ND should be in pretty good shape w. Tillery - Coney - and Gilman (who is The Real Deal).

9.  One more Wimbush comment:  cut him some slack for the 2nd half - our OT's were beaten like a drum.

10.  It's been a long time since ND put that much constant pressure on a QB.

11.  Who flipped out when Finke fair caught that ball?  NOT ME!  (I watched some of the Thursday night games.)

12. Did anyone else consider the humidity and silently hope it wouldn't affect ND's ability to hold onto the ball?  And while no one brought it up as an excuse, I couldn't help but wonder if UM's critical fail on the short 3rd Quarter FG attempt might've been influenced by that.

13.  Call me a softy but I liked at the end how many of the players on each side shook hands.

14.  Every picture tells a story, don't it?

Spent some time feeling inferior...

Wager Time!
.
And the final prognostications are in...  with a pool total of $1,175.  Let the games begin!

What they lack in brevity they make up in ‘set your hair on fire’ pessimism.

And Fyodor was The Man.  (Anyone who can write "The Idiot" 150 years ago gets my vote for prescient genius.)

11+ wins would be Dostoevsky-like excellence.

First of all, dogs rule.

Dogs in Space even more so.  Especially the first, and when they end up giving their lives in such heroic fashion, well...

Like a 10-2 season, you probably wouldn't have cheered for Laika at the time but in hindsight, you’re more impressed with the outcome than you expected.

Sergei Federov

Is he the greatest of Russian hockey players?
400 goals, 554 assists. MVP, Selke winners.

He’s gotta be in the conversation.

But, as my (then 10 yr. old) nephew once said, he was “that stinkin’ Federov” for many - so you have to be a little conflicted about him and his impressive career.

Probably like 9 wins will leave you.

Schadenfreude of The Week

1.   Miami.  Nothing gave me greater joy to see the 'Canes run out of Jerry Jones World while LSU mocked their turnover chain with their own turnover towel.

Or as one social media contributor opined, perhaps 'The U' can repurpose their chain for ankle monitors.

Fat, drunk and glittery is no way to go through life, son..

2.   Florida State.  The Seminoles, however, would be a close 2nd.  Getting crushed late in the game, looking inept on offense for almost the entire 60 minutes and still yapping.

I think I'm beginning to understand Notre Dame's seeming de-emphasis on recruiting Florida.

3.  Texas.   I have no real bone to pick with the Longhorns, other than to say that, much like the riff raff in Ann Arbor, they think they can throw money at the anointed "best young coach in all the land" and it's problem solved.

Not so fast.

And that revelation, to an equally entitled fanbase, makes me happy.

Terry's Trolls

Every year I have to re-visit the Tool Matrix, to make sure I've got my dependent variables correct.

"Evil / Amoral Tool" (see Meyer, Urban) remains irrevocably fixed on one axis -  as does Stupid Tool (see Bayless, Skip) on another.

As of today, at least one of the other end points would surely have to have something in the Insufferable Douche territory.

Which leads us to...

1.
Lighten up, Nicholas
  Nick Saban.    The guy has every competitive advantage in the world, starting with seemingly non-existent academic requirements, a sophisticated bag man system and a shockingly healthy state fiscal condition that can pay him more money than any coach could be possibly be worth.

So what's the burr under his saddle?  A sideline reporter asking him, after a blow out win, the most predictable - dare I say quotidian - of questions ('who's your QB now') and he goes full Network-Peter Finch-mad-as-hell.

Asshole.

2.  Chase Winovich.  This is probably unfair - the kid played a pretty incredible game, having spent almost as much time in ND's backfield as Wimbush during the 2nd half - but the response to his quote (see sidebar) is perfect.

"Here's how points work."

The guess here is he's not a math major.

3.  Braylon Edwards.  After publicly trashing his alma mater's effort vs. ND (and his subsequent suspension), he admits that he was excessively emotional and, um, inebriated.  Oops.

Which pretty much also describes my post-Packers viewing state for all of the '80s.

4.  ND Message Boarders.  This is why I don't post and why others shouldn't either, especially after a committed day of drinking.  Your team wins a hard fought rivalry game and someone starts a thread - I have no freaking idea why - on the state of ND helmets' paint and this is the response:

They looked too yellow.  That's your big contribution?  Hmmm.

So the next time one gets to thinking that ND doesn't have the pinheads that other schools do, please remember this.   Ours may not be of the sociopath variety that populate Columbus and SEC country but I think we can go toe-to-toe with anyone on basic, meat 'n potatoes totally-missed-the-plot, idiocy.

5.  UM Message Boarders.  Let's end on some fun. Who doesn't love a good troll of the opponent's message board after they lose.  Watching self-immolation is fun!  Here's a sample of the UM board on Sunday:

SHOCKING! We're losing a big game......AGAIN! We're making ND look like a NC contender and they are dominating this game! Can't say I'm surprised....for about 15 years now the M has stood for Mediocre.....HELLLLLLO MUSIC CITY BOWL!!!!!

[After their FG:] No shutout this year at least.

7-5 sounds about right.

I don't have enough beer for this.

I can't believe we are making one of the worst QBs in the country look like Joe Montana.

Michigan, the Rutgers of Ann Arbor.

Did we prepare for this game...like...at all?

Sad to say but they are starting to resemble the Lions!

WARRINER YOU FAILED MISERABLY.

Right now, I'm afraid of being embarrassed by Western [Michigan] next week.

Harbaugh is Brady Hoke with fewer wins.

Soooo who's the next HC on the radar?
I say go for [Stoops] at Oklahoma. Just give him whatever he wants.

[Wonderful example of lowering one's expectations in stride:] I still think we can beat the unranked teams on our schedule and get a bowl bid.

[Describing the Michigan play-calling process:] Borges phoned the plays in to McElwain, who relayed them to Warriner, who wrote them down on a note card and had a runner walk them up to the booth to Pep. Pep subsequently called down to Harbaugh, who relayed them to the QB.

[In response to above:] We called plays on offense?

[And my personal favorite:] Whipped by a better team. And ND's coach wears real pants.

Cocktail of the Month

It turns out that my wife, the Pillar of Alcoholic Moderation, has something of a thing for tequila.

Her affection for margaritas having already been well established (just ask the city of Austin who, presumably, had to drop their tequila inventory forecasts after the ND-Texas game weekend a few years ago)...

Now she's discovered the Mexican Mule, the tequila-based companion to it's more popular sister, the Moscow Mule.  If last weekend is any indication, Valpo better start stocking up on its ginger beer and Patron.  So this week's cocktail's for you, Lisa Ann...

Tequila Sunrise Boulevard
Sunset Boulevard (1950)
Directed by Billy Wilder

In the days before social media in the pre-Photoshopped world, aging stars would drift into the background of their own minds and never be heard from again.  These true life Hollywood horror stories fascinated auteur Billy Wilder, who offered an ultra-dark look at the ultra-sunny Sunset Boulevard - specifically the glamorous and gilded Beverly Hills block on which former film beauty Norma Desmond's mansion sits in decadent array.

Mr. Rasmus, I'm ready for my close up...
When a downtrodden young screenwriter wanders up her driveway after escaping his own demons, Norma sees him as her chance at a comeback (even if he ends up seeing the bottom of the pool).

Descend the staircase for a poolside-worthy poison featuring a (Pinot) noir twist.

  • 1  3/4 oz. tequila
  • 2 oz. orange juice
  • 1/2 oz. Pinot Noir
  • 1/2 oz. grenadine syrup
Pour the tequila over ice in a rocks glass and then add the orange juice.  Slowly add the Pinot Noir by pouring it over the back of a spoon (rested against the glass's rim), allowing the liquid to sink to the bottom of the glass. Finish by slowly adding the grenadine.

August: The Game Is Afoot

Those are the memories
That made me a wealthy soul...

The football season draweth near.  And with it the (now) annual Corrigan NE coast pilgrimage, a veritable Sisyphean quest to answer the age old question:  how many friends and family can a couple sponge off of in a single road trip?  (Answer: a lot.)

I'll give you an hour to move your hands, Lisa...
    The most sincere of thank you's , therefore, to:

      * Peter / Bonnie
      * Al / Diane
      * Tim / Marcia
      * Jim / Steph
      * David / Alan
      * Bob / Teresa

    As well as Jerry and Jane, JP and Shari, Randy and Jean - as well as the famous Dr. Scanlon Mr. Cincotta for taking time out of their days to hang with Lisa and I.

    Pete, I feel I can share this in confidence...
    It was unfailingly fantastico everywhere we went.  The weather was (mostly) great, the banter was lively and the hospitality without parallel.

    Indeed we experienced the whole spectrum of storytelling on this trip... from the occasional, mind-numbingly mundane (yes, we get it, Tim, your experience as Tiffany Trump's Penn faculty advisor should be sufficient for White House security clearance) to the provocative, even near scandalous (who'd a thought JP was still that limber - he must be doing a lot of yoga these days) - though propriety forbids me from repeating much of what I heard in that latter category.

    Yeah, right.

    Put a G&T in my hand and I'm singing like a jailhouse stooge.

    Tim, retirement sounds a lot like what you're doing right now...

    And if my alcoholic intake over the road trip was any indication, I'll be the next freakin' Pavarotti.

    But I digress.

    And one of the additional benefits of barnstorming our great country in the 21st century, beyond spending quality time with the missus - is the proliferation of The Podcast, a 'new media' invention that allows for one to be distracted while driving when texting isn't simply enough.

    Both informative and entertaining, the well conceived podcast enables one to spend as little as 30 minutes and come off sounding significantly more informed than one really is.

    In other words, hello gorgeous.  I have found my métier!

    So... for those willing to stoop to such lowbrow media, allow me to suggest but two:
    Stranger danger!
    • Disgraceland (www.disgracelandpod.com)
      • Obscure stories of very bad behavior by some of the music world's most famous, certainly most colorful, entertainers from Sinatra to Marley, Jerry Lee Lewis to James Brown, Van Morrison to Sid Vicious.  The Motley Crüe one is exactly what you'd expect it to be.  (And if you listen to just one, make it the Norwegian Death Metal segment. Eek.)
    • Behind The Bastards (www.behindthebastards.com)
      • Interesting 'bet you didn't know this' stories about some of histories worst humans.  From Vlad the Impaler to Hitler to Stalin (did you know, that Stalin wasn't even his real name!  It was a his nom de revolution - meaning 'steel' - basically taking a bad porn star name to inspire his genocidal vision).  Oh - the 'What Was On bin Laden's Hard Drive' chapter is especially interesting. (Hint:  starts w 'p' and rhymes w 'corn'.)

    Himmler... Goering... watch this - it's all you need to know.
    What's that got to do with anything?

    Simply that often, we think we know someone.  Or their story.

    Then you find out... not so much. That, for instance, Nazi Germany's military strategy was largely inspired by the country's equivalent of JK Rowling a con man obsessed with western US mythology who captivated a nation.

    That ought to give one pause as you do your pre-football season due diligence.  As if you needed another reminder of 'don't believe everything you read.'

    But hey, good luck!

    Word of the Month (maybe Year)

    Used in a sentence:

    Young Jerrence pondered much of what he's seen or read in this new Truth Isn't Truth' world and considered the almost to-be-taken-for-granted mendacious nature of so many public institutions:

    *  the White House
    *  the Catholic Church
    *  the Ohio State

    He was pretty sure that, in fact, one could now major in Mendacity at tOSU.

    And he wondered, will the collective ND Nation now get off Brian Kelly's case for his head coach-y obfuscation when queried by the press?

    I didn't think so.

    I sighed a million sighs,
    I told a million lies
    To myself...

    Wager Time!

    We're going round in circles!
    We have no single point of view.
    And like the clouds that turn to every passing wind
    We turn to any signal that comes through...

    Certainly not one opinion but early returns do suggest a certain collective optimism about the season from the group.  Either that or a devil-may-care, "skew it, let's get this over with early in the season" fatalism.   Funny how often those two attitudes can be confused.

    Terry's Trolls

    I saw on ESPN Sports Center this morning that the Big 10 has five teams rated in the pre-season top 15.  The most of any Power 5 league.

    Yet there was no mention of them also leading the country in reprehensible behavior.  At least behavior that's been caught...

    Time will tell us
    Who... is trying to sell us.

    This week's candidates:

    1.  Zach Smith.  One month later and we're not talking about your wrestling program anymore, Ohio State!  That's the good news.  That, and your prior tatoo scandal is looking pret-ty silly.

    The bad news is that your football program - and St. Urban - are gonna come out of this looking like the sleazy bunch that they are. All because an assistant coach beats up his wife, has an affair, has sex toys sent to the office*, sends dick pics FROM THE WHITE HOUSE because... why not?

    *to be fair, what if Amazon delivered it a neighbor?!  Awkward.

    2.  DJ DurkinThat he coached at Michigan only two years ago (and the U. of Florida before that, hmmm) only makes this story that much more Big 10 relevant...

    If anyone had thought the age of analytics in sport had made the neanderthal football coach extinct, think again.

    Some clown thinks he's Vince Lombardi and lives by the tired credo of 'if it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger'.

    What about when it does kill you, coach?

    3.  Jim Harbaugh.  You know it's a bad stretch for the Big 10 when he's the league's coaching show pony, simply for the reason that he's just unfathomably weird and not detestably amoral.

    Of course, disparaging chickens is fightin' words in Scotchlandia, they being the caliphate country city-state bird 'n all.

    Especially now, given the three newbies status as fully contributing members of Scotchlandia society. Yes, those are colored eggs - they don't call the hens "Easter Egg'ers" for nuthin'.  (If Timothy Leary had genetically designed a chicken this would be it.)

    And finally (one couldn't leave out the SEC)...

    4.  Dan Mullen.  When Florida Gators head coach Dan Mullen said his team had a no-guns policy, what he actually meant was the exact opposite.  After WR Kadarius Toney was found with a loaded AR-15 rifle in the back seat of his car, Mullen said the policy allows players to own guns as “we live in a country where that’s one of your rights.”

    I meant only 'mostly no guns...'
    While Mullen felt the need to clarify what the no-guns policy meant, several of his players thought the message was pretty simple and clear.

    "No weapons allowed," WR Josh Hammond said. "That's been our policy since coach got here."  Mullen, hired last November, said that’s only the case in “certain situations.”

    "It's a no-weapons policy in certain situations of how to be educated to not have (issues)," he said. "No weapons, that's easy to remember. If I write out all the different (scenarios) — no weapons in these situations or have a weapon for a hunting situation, if I'm doing this, I store it at this location, I keep it here, I have gun safety rules and knowledge — that's not a quick catch to them to register in their mind. Does that make sense?"

    Actually, no.

    Final Thought

    How I Spent My Summer Vacation
    (This is pretty impressive.)
