Week 11 (2013): Comfortably Numb

In Scotchlandia - as well as Terry's head - the more the merrier. And the conversation du jour inside that head Saturday largely dealt with the concept of perspective. How to recognize it.  And how to gain it.  Like when one is sitting at home, seeing a snowy, wind chilled football game on the tube and think, "Gee, that looks really cold there. And probably super uncomfortable..."

But you're not there so you don't really have any true perspective.

Or when one asks their personal physician to suggest a pain killer for your football-related angst and he prescribes single malt.  Wow.  You ask him, "But Dr. Bob, I thought medicine wasn't supposed to taste good."  And he tells you to just wait until medical marijuana comes to Ohio.

Double wow.  But you remember this was the same guy that told you your Macallan & Cheetos diet was, in fact, an AMA-supported dietary regimen.

But again, you don't have his professional perspective so how can you doubt him?

Or when you watch a PAC-12 team play - one that your team has already beaten - and you see them smoke a highly rated conference rival.

It shakes up your perspective.  Like maybe your team isn't so bad.  Or maybe anyone, outside the state of Alabama, isn't really all that good.

Michigan State and USC haven't lost since we beat them.  Michigan is now worse than mediocre.  But we lost to... Pitt. What's it all mean?  I'm confused.  And with one game left in the season, I'm finding fewer and fewer lasting conclusions.

I do know the 'A' Lot tailgaters totally rocked.  But you knew that.

Text of The Week
This may be worse than watching the 'burn' offense...
Received while watching ND's 4th quarter vs. BYU (11/23/13)

Song of the Week
Completing my Southern Rock Trilogy - and as a final salute to (from what I've heard) the last we'll see of natural grass at Notre Dame stadium.  (And if Saturday's game was any indication, good riddance.)  I offer you a signature Outlaws song.

Green grass and high tides forever.
Castles of stone, soul and glory.
Lost faces say we adore you
As kings and queens bow and play for you.
Yeah they play just for you...

Any good song inspires a vivid memory.  Maybe more than one. With this particular tune, one is wisked back to 1979 and the recognition that when you heard this song coming out of the ground floor bedroom of 801 St. Louis Blvd...

The mythical creature known as "Coatman" could not be far away.

Coatman.

-  Mild mannered accounting major by day.
-  Super Miscreant by night.

Sure, things got broken. But legends were made.

Word of The Week
OBNUBILATE (v.)   \äb-ˈnü-bə-ˌlāt

:  To obscure or cover with darkness

1st known use:  1583

Used in a sentence:  As black snow clouds obnubliated the sky over Notre Dame stadium, it occurred to me that I had friends there - caught in what looked like increasingly wretched, maybe even dangerous, weather.  Bummer.

Game Observations.
Let's be clear here - we all know I don't really know dookie about football strategy. But it bears repeating.  I was a kicker.  Certainly I have no grasp of the more nuanced points of match ups and stuff like that. But I watch a lot of it and there are certain reoccurring themes that seem to resonate, starting with 'pressure on the QB is good'.

I have long had the simplistic notion that if your name isn't Manning (Peyton) / Brady / Brees / Rodgers, a defense is likely to have success significantly more often than failure when you pressure the bejesus out of the QB.  And in college football, that's even more the case.  There simply aren't that many preternaturally gifted guys at that position that will consistently burn you...

Which leads to these series of thoughts from Saturday's game:
*  We play soft so much of the time, no wonder every QB has the game of their lives against us. I don't think we have to go Full Metal Tenuta but mixing in some level of creative 'go for it' pressure might be worth exploring.

*  Folston has instincts you can't teach.  Play him A LOT.

*  For all our weeping 'n wailing 'n gnashing of teeth, our O-line is pretty awesome at pass protection.

*  What is up with the turf?  We playing the game at Soldier Field?

*  120 person NBC team - wow.  Almost as impressive as what Lini amassed to get that keg in the stadium.

*  Louis Nix taking 19 credits this semester?! Someone wants their degree before they go pro.

*  Finally willing to concede Cam McD is pretty good.  Still don't understand why they run him wide, however.

*  Even before the 4th Quarter (Tommy Time!) tell me you don't hold your breath when Rees goes back to pass in the red zone.

Busted!
*   Tommy is like a slot machine - you truly don't know from play to play what you're gonna get. He threw some excellent passes and some truly hellish ones.

*  Amazing how a tackle here or there could completely change a game.  Last year we made 'em. This year we don't.

*  How is it we're in our 12th game and there is still miscommunication between QB and WR?

*  Personally, I thought Kelly's late game 4th down call would've worked big if Folston doesn't bobble the exchange.

*  We honestly don't have anyone better than Mathias Farley?

*  Stop me if you've heard this before:  BYU wasn't nearly as good as we made them look.
Buddy's buddy
"That game was... brutal."

By rights, the call this week should be a slam dunk, Jarron Jones. Kid played the game of his life when the team needed it most. But I'm a sucker for sentimental schmaltz and this one has got nothing to do with the game. On Senior Day, I'm calling out Louis Nix III, Jaylon Smith and Luke Massa for simply embodying what ND - and college athletics maybe 50 yrs. ago - aspires to be (but rarely is) about.

  • Nix.  He simply said, "Notre Dame changed my life."  Pretty cool.
  • Smith.  Easily the most highly regarded recruit we've snagged in, like, forever (yes, higher than Te'o) and yet came in with zero attitude - and played today honoring Danny Spond, his self-described mentor, by wearing #13.  Pretty cool again.
  • Massa.  The anti-Jaylon:  wasn't highly rated coming and made no appreciable impact as he goes out. But by wearing #78, he would have us remember the kid who never even made it into the freshmen class in 2009, 5-star OL Matt James, who died as many HS seniors do - senselessly.  And I thought that was pretty cool as well.

THE BET
And down goes Alvin.  Everyone rejoices!  Not so much from envy but from the collective relief of not staring at a seven win season and wondering how / where it all fell apart.   For all the angst this season has certainly inspired, when one looks at the collection of predictions around 8-9, it's hard to argue that this isn't pretty much exactly where we all thought a Golson-less season would end up.

Time to think about a new tiebreaker.  How about this one:  will Jameis Winston get indicted for rape?  Yes or no.

Hahhahahahhahahhahahahhahahaha.  As if that'll ever happen.

Quote of The Week

"If I seem unduly clear to you, you must have misunderstood what I said."
                                                            Alan Greenspan

Or maybe it was Bob Diaco that said that.

Schadenfreude.
A&M? How ordinarwy...
More than the win that shouldn't have been as close as it was, the number of teams that went down in flames was a real highlight.  This week's faves:

1. Texas A&M.  Consider this one of the few times I'll ever cheer for a Les Miles-led team.  But I am sooo tired of all the "Kevin Sumlin is a god / Johnny Football is even better this year" rubbish.  Reality check time.

2.  UCLA.  Same goes for Jim Mora, Jr. and this club.  Love ya when you beat USC - like next week - kinda like it when you get knocked down a peg by a team we beat.

3. Oregon.  Not just beaten, crushed.  By a school known more for its partying prowess.  Anything that further pops the mystical Team Nike balloon is a good thing, me thinks.

4.  Baylor.  Coach Briles, aren't you glad you signed that mega-extension last week?  Timing is indeed everything.

5.  ND stadium-goers.   All bundled up, with my fire, my popcorn and my (2nd half) single malt, I quite enjoyed watching the ND 'snow globe' experience, didn't you?  "Hey, Lisa, come see this - it looks really freakin' cold there!"

Please note that I didn't even bring up Michigan this week.  Oops, I kinda just did.

Lane's Lads
I thoroughly enjoy celebrating the truly stupid - that class of human who only through Divine Intervention doesn't end up as a posthumous Darwin Award winner... but I enjoy substantially less the ethically / morally challenged cretin whom seem to believe that earthly rules don't apply to them.  Unfortunately, it seems like a lot of that is going 'round these days.

Jame-is-a-little-nervous...
1.  Tallahassee.  What a week its been for FSU-ville, eh?  Your star QB is accused of rape, your police dept. has been accused of suppressing the investigation and your athletic dept. has been accused of enabling a culture of faculty intimidation.  Let's not forget the DA's office who said they wouldn't be finalizing their findings for, oh, two more weeks.  Right after the ACC championship or the close of the Heisman balloting.

The place is a moral cesspool.  Don't they know the SEC is no longer accepting applications...

2.  Nick Saban.   I find it impressive when someone is so comfortable in their simpleminded skin. Secure in their myopic outlook on the world.  So when Big Nick took a reporter to task this week for simply asking what he thought of his QB appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated, he went off on how he doesn't have time to pay attention to magazines. Or, apparently, anything.  So I guess a follow up question on Syria, Iran, the NSA or Obamacare is out of the question, coach?

3.  Drew Brees. Everyone see the awesome Ahmad Brooks hit on the Saints QB that should've basically ended their game vs. the 49'ers but was deemed a drive-extending penalty? Whether it was or wasn't, I'm not debating.  But when the star QB says (and I'm paraphrasing here), "I knew when I got hit really hard that it was gonna be a penalty..." you've become the spokesperson for 'QB's As Entitled Weenie Boys' club.

 4.  The SEC.  I thought September was supposed to be 'Cupcake Month' with November being 'Big Game Month' but apparently everyone in the SEC didn't get the memo:
  • Bama - playing Chattanooga
  • So. Carolina - playing Coastal Carolina
  • Florida - playing Georgia Southern. AND LOSING.

 Cocktail of the Week
 The Missed Deadline

  • 2 oz. Bombay Sapphire gin
  • 1 oz. dry vermouth
  • 1/4 oz. Luxardo Maraschino liqueur
  • 2 dashes Agnostura orange bitters

Shake with ice, then pour into a chilled martini glass.  Take a sip, when you realize your wife has slipped into your home office and is staring at you.

"How's the blog going?" she asks, evenly.  Admit that you're a bit behind schedule.  She arches an eyebrow.  "All you have to do is write about football, alcohol and make jokes that aren't as clever as you think they are," she says.  "I would've thought that would be right in your wheelhouse."

You laugh at her joke.  She doesn't laugh back.

Final Thought - I
"A-aron?  Where is A-aron right now?"  (That's what all of Packer Nation wants to know.)  Most of you have probably seen this but it remains too funny.

Insubordinate and churlish.

And one needs to be occasionally reminded that all of this is supposed to be fun.

Week 10 (2013): The Dream's In The Ditch

Wait til that lad grows up and discovers Scotchlandia's Cultural Center...
As I was out doing yardwork Saturday - beyond unparalleled autumnal beauty, Scotchlandia also produces a prolific amount of leaves - I got to thinking about the various geographic pockets where kids collectively came from to Notre Dame.  Among them...

The Chicagoans.  Too many too mention or categorize.  Never understood why so many of them claimed Chicago as their 'home town' when their suburbs were closer to Wisconsin and Iowa.

The Long Islanders.  Loud.  Like "It goes to 11" loud.  Arrived
freshman year with an impressive swagger that suggested they felt they should be on scholarship just by virtue of the superior level of culture they brought from The Hub of The Universe. Except most of them never made west of Chicago until well into their junior year. Worldly indeed.

The Southern Californians.   Preternaturally mellow.  Lotsa pukka shells.  Winter always inspired bizarre wardrobe choices.

But none of them could hold a candle to The Pittsburgh'ers...

When someone mentions Pittsburgh, what do you think of?  Steelers?  Pirates?  Penguins?  Their foreign language?

Me, I think of two things:

1.  George Romero.  Creator of the Greatest Zombie Trilogy ever, including Dawn of The Dead, shot at the Monroeville Mall (a little
Where yins going?
east of the 'burgh, just off 376) which remains the Metaphor For Our Consumer Society Against Which All Others Shall Be Judged.

How yins doing?

2.  The South Hills Catholic Magnificent Seven that entered ND with us in '75.

What an eclectic bunch they were:

Dave.  My roommate, best man at my wedding, Shea's godfather.  Gay.  And arguably the most normal of the bunch.
Albert.  Engineer, Scientist & Saint.  And piccante sauce aficionado.
Jim M.  General Program major.  Nuff said.

Jim O.  Looked normal. Wasn't.

Tommy.  Appeared gay.  Wasn't.  (It being The Age of Disco, he was just far better positioned with women than the rest of us.)
Skip.   Another roommate.  Another GP major.  Very good basketball player.  Marched to a different drummer's beat, one I never quite heard.

Don Something or otherHS classmate #7.  Lived on South Quad, think I met him once early freshmen year.  Never seen again.  Could be rooming with Jimmy Hoffa.
My point?  I have no point.  Other than to possibly point out that when the topic of the Pittsburgh comes up in conversation, I've learned to never judge a book by its cover and always be ready for the unexpected.  Just like Saturday night's inexplicable interceptions / penalties resulting into ejection / running back rotation decisions etc.

Song of the Week

Two points to be made here:

1.  I owe almost all of my music sensibility to a series of profound influences occurring (not surprisingly) after college.  With some broad generalizations for some overlap of times...

The 80'sThe Splendore Years.  Living in Boston when The Clash, The Cars, Elvis C et al were en fuego.

The 90'sThe Volk-Thompson Era.  Richard Thompson, the B-52's, The Tubes @ Park West.

And, for the past few years, The Shea Corrigan Period.

By any objective measure, progress.

And this week's song comes directly from her.  After  spending the summer in Nashville, one of the new musical offerings she returned home with - was former Drive-By Trucker, Jason Isbell.

2.  Monday having been Veteran's Day, I am reminded of the many interpretations on The Cost of War theme that artists have taken a stab at.  I've been generally (and embarrassingly) pretty insensitive to nearly all of them.

Not so with this week's selection. Isbell's take on a very personal sacrifice that one small town kid made is a really moving tribute about a real guy from a real town with real friends and family.

Maybe it's due to the fact that the love of daughter Ryan's life is receiving his Navy SEAL* pin on Friday - as kickoff to a career path that none of us can even remotely fathom.

Or maybe because because it's just a terrific song that puts into sharp relief how truly meaningless football games are in some of the grander scheme of things.

"Maybe 18 was too early,
Maybe 30 or 40 is too.
Did you get your chance to make peace with The Man
Before He sent down his angels for you?

And nobody here can forget you
You showed us what we had to lose.
But you never planned on the bombs in the sand
Or sleeping in your dress blues..."

I truly hope many of you listen to this.  It's surely worthy of 5 minutes of your time.

Isbell's "Live From Alabama" (a year old now) is so good, here's a second offering, the haunting Danko / Manuel - a song that invites the question, why do so many artists like singing about the former The Band member's death?

*Speaking of the SEALs, just saw "Captain Phillips" over the weekend.  Absolutely terrific movie - thanks, Mark, for the recommendation.  You'll walk out of the theater recognizing that when the SEAL's get involved, it's game over.

If only they had a special Defensive Coordinator ops.

Word of The Week
FRUSTRANEOUS (adj.)
:  useless, unprofitable, inevitably causing frustration

Antonyms:  gratifying.

Used in a sentence:  Young Terry lay awake at night wondering when he assigned himself the frustraneous life mission of being a ND football fan?

Observations From The Game

Looks like I picked the wrong week...
I blame myself.  I took a break from my usual at-home, scotch-based viewing routine and watched the game cold turkey.

Never. Doing. THAT. Again.

With the synapses firing at a madcap pace, I have this to share (most of which Tim 'n Tom have already articulated better):

-  The game hasn't even kicked off and Brent was speaking in rhyme.  I should've seen the signs.

-  I don't understand anything we do football-wise.  Not the schemes or strategy.  Not the player rotations.  Certainly not what we choose to practice - or not - during the week.

-  Targeting is the most well intentioned, ill conceived rule ever.  I watched a fair amount of football Saturday - saw plays in every single game just like Tuitt's.  Some worse.  Only called once all day.  Welcome to the ACC, Notre Dame.

-  It's going to be very difficult listening to the twang of ACC refs for the rest of my life.

-  "Just say no"... to rolling Tommy out.  Ever.

-  Do you get the sense even Kelly is looking forward to the end of The Rees Era?

-  I used to think Tommy's biggest weakness was his lack of arm strength.  Of late, it would actually be his decision making.

-  But make no mistake, he's a symptom, not the cause of this year's disappointment.  And there's no one I've felt worse for, all year long, after INT #2.  It's not like the kid isn't trying his hardest...

-  I don't think Kelly is dumb. Not by a long shot.  So do coaches get to South Bend and get stupid? (I know Class of '79ers did but we weren't getting paid $3-4MM.)

-  Biggest disappointment of 2013:  Amir Carlisle.
-  Close second:  Mathias Farley.

-  Nice ball awareness, Sheldon.  Minimally cost us 50 yds.

-  Devin Butler actually turned his heard on a pass defense?!  Oh well, he's just a freshman.  We'll coach that out of him.

-   What is it with the drops?!  Do we blame those on the coaches?

Way to take on that blocker, son!
-  9:00 left and I just want this game to be over.

-  Correction from last week:  we're not the worst tackling team in America.  We're the worst tackling and blitzing team in America.

-  Honestly, those refs were wretched.

-  We get everyone's best game.  Who gets ours?

Buddy's buddy

Can't bring myself to drag my compatriots Murphy & Seamus into this week's debacle.  Really came close to saying 'nyet' to anyone.

But one guy does seem to be recognized and I'm not sure we'll get the chance the rest of the season:  Ben Koyack.  Pretty sure he was highly recruited and pretty sure he was close to wearing the 'bust' label.  But for the last, what 4-5 games, the guy has been a total revelation.   And that catch should've been ruled a TD, no way there was clear evidence to overturn. It'll be very nice seeing him back next year.

Quote of The Week

"One of the symptoms of an approaching nervous breakdown is the belief that one's work is terribly important."
Bertrand Russell, 20th Century British smarty pants

The same could be said about one's avocations, like being a ND football fan.

Schadenfreude

This time of year, with the games finally meaning something (read the top teams actually playing a reasonably competitive oppponent)

1.  Oregon.  Did you know Ken Kesey is an Oregon alum?  The man responsible for one of the great evenings of my ND life.  So I don't take as much joy as one might normally presume... chock this one up to west coast hubris.  And exceptionally weak line play.

2.  LSU.  Truth be told, I kinda wanted to see Bama knocked off their perch but this is not a bad consolation prize, watching Les Miles sputter his rationale as to he got smoked. Again.

3.  Miami.  This year's Emporer's New Clothes winner for sham team.

4.  Michigan.  File this under 'misery loves company'.

Crash's Cretins

Richie Incognito, part II.  I can't let this go... to me, it's inarguable that Richie is an intellectual and moral amoeba - both Nebraska and Oregon asked him to leave, after all - but apparently he's a reasonable football player in a culture that's fundamentally results-ortiented.

Personally, I don't believe fear is a sustainable team building device, either in athletics or real life. Is football a unique culture? For sure. Does every team need some tough guy, hard cases?  No doubt - though I never heard of the Steelers / 49'ers / Patriots having these problems in their heyday.  Probably because they had leaders who kept their knuckleheads in check.

And if there's a potential ND application to the odd Richie-Jonathan saga - and sadly I think there is - it has more to do with a leadership void than our lack of tough guys.  We had it last year. We don't this year.

One man's opinion.

Cocktail of the Week
 On The Waterfront

  • One pint of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
  • One shot glass filled with Makers Mark
Ever since the Pitt game, this is pretty much the only drink you have the energy to make.  Take the shot glass of bourbon and drop it directly into the pint of beer.

Do it dramatically, with the air of a tough western Pennsylvania coal miner at the end of a hard day unloading freight.  Drink as much of it as you can in one long gulp.  Realize, too late, that the shot glass shattered in the drink.

At Porter County Regional Hospital, the doctor is unsympathetic.  "Most people just pour the whiskey directly into the beer," he mutters.  "Especially soft-headed office fops like you."

Final Thought - I
If you want to re-gain a little perspective, watch this.  Of course I'm a sucker for one-kidney stories... who isn't?  But it'll make you feel significantly better about the ND program - and athlete - that otherwise makes you want to set your hair on fire. What little most of you have...

And remind you why you cheer for 'em.

Final Thought - II
Masterpiece Theater

After last week's "final month of our collegiate experience" frolic, we return to The Bates Motel 801 for more high culture.  This week, The Boys create an Art Gallery to demonstrate they're not just a bunch of pretty faces.
